A burial vault is a lined and sealed outer receptacle that houses and protects the casket (the casket protects the body).  They are designed to protect the casket from the weight of the earth as well as heavy cemetery maintenance equipment.  They are also designed to resist water and preserve the beauty of the cemetery by preventing the ground from settling.  Vaults are requried by all cemeteries.
